The land trust accreditation program recognizes land conservation organizations that meet national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever. Beaufort County Open Land Trust is pleased to announce it is applying for renewal of accreditation. A public comment period is now open.
The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance, conducts an extensive review of each applicant’s policies and programs. The value and status of having LTA Accreditation status in a strong land conservation state like South Carolina is significant. BCOLT has experienced heightened credibility with its federal, regional, state, county and local partners since achieving accreditation in 2016. The importance of LTA Accreditation was recently recognized by Beaufort County's Ordinance 2019/48, the Rural and Critical Land Program Ordinance, which defines "land trust" (Section 26-29) as "a nonprofit land conservation organization accredited by the Land Trust Alliance which meets the requirements of Internal Revenue Code Section 170 and is active in conservation efforts in the county or state." We worked for this language to be included in the ordinance so that County Councilmembers, County staff and citizens recognize the high standards of LTA Accreditation in our work.
The Commission invites public input and accepts signed, written comments on pending applications. Comments must relate to how Beaufort County Open Land Trust complies with national quality standards. These standards address the ethical and technical operation of a land trust. For the full list of standards see http://www.landtrustaccreditation.org/.../indicator....
